Open House Festival 2022

We are delighted to announce that Red Door Studios is part of this year's Open House Festival. Our doors will be open to the public on Sat 17th and Sun 18th of September 11am-3pm!

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the festival and we are delighted that East Ham has been invited to take part along with 9 other neighbourhoods.

We will be featuring part of Ferha Farooqui’s collection of ‘Disappearing Landmarks’ paintings which depict lost place and human stories observed on the streets of Newham, revealing the continuity between past and present and how the past impinges on today. The figures and places are a combination of found images from photographic archives, observed contemporary street life and reflections on wider social change.

Alongside the exhibition we will have an opportunity for visitors to be part of making a miniature city built from waste materials, in this we would like participants to consider what we value and want to keep within our cities from the past and what we feel is missing and needs to be considered when looking into the future.

SPAB architect Britt Harwood will join us at 1pm on both Saturday and Sunday to give a tour of the building and a talk about the individual history of the building and a wider commentary on how and why we should respect, maintain and repair our historic buildings.

You can book through the Open House website here if you would like to ensure there is space for a specific time/event or you can drop in to us from 11am-3pm both days although please consider our 30 person maximum capacity.

Drinks and home-made snacks will be available to purchase from our pop-up café!

Life Drawing with Lucia

We are hosting monthly sessions with the amazing @lucia_lifemodel !

Next session: Tuesday 14th of June 7-9pm

Lucia (they/them) is a life model and performance artist based in London.

Lucia has worked as a life model since 2015 and sees life modelling as a form of queer & body-positive healing as well as a performance practice in itself that plays an important role in the artistic process.

As an artist, Lucia merges live art, theatre and drag exploring themes such as abjection, gender constructs and the grotesque from a transfeminist, neuroqueer and anarchic lens.

Lucia loves to bring elements from their artistic practice into life modelling to create theatrical, experimental and surreal sessions.

Identidad Flamenca LIVE @ Red Door Studios

We are delighted to announce that on Friday 6th of May Identidad Flamenca will be joining us for a wonderful set of flamenco music and dancing!

DOORS OPEN 7.30pm and tickets can be bought on the door for £5
(If you would like to reserve seats in advance please contact freya@throughthereddoor.org)

Our bar will be open and cocktails will be available!

A little bit about the band…

“Identidad Flamenca has arisen from the musical search of two individuals attracted by flamenco culture and united by a strong bond of brotherhood.

Being aware that flamenco is foreign to its origins, they highlight the preservation of their cultural identity when joining the creation of said art, enriching their experience with the influence of other musical styles, such as Hindi, Classical, Latin American music, etc

Under that premise, they have been collaborating with like-minded people, always seeking to open up opportunities to see new faces on the Flamenco scene in London.”

We look forward to seeing you there !

NEWHAM UNLOCKED FESTIVAL. Portal sculpture workshop

ART AND SOUL FEST IN PLASHET PARK, CURATED BY APPLECART ARTS

THE CEDAR TENT

The circle is inclusive, it represents the whole. The whole community, no-one excluded. It is an ancient piece of geometry, valued symbolically in every culture and continent across the world.

Help us to build a suspended circle sculpture and create a textile-based installation in the park. Working with artists from Red Door Studios you will contribute to the making of a large 3d willow circle and also create your own small-scale textile based woven art pieces for our installation. Learn about 3d making techniques, working with Willow, weaving and textile design.

In situ the suspended circle encourages imaginative and creative thought:

It is the iris of an eye which we can look through, it will frame the festival.
It is a portal to an imagined place
It is the shape of the sun or moon.

This workshop is suitable for all ages and abilities, Children under 7 will need to work with an adult or older child to complete their artwork. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

When: Saturday 25th September, drop in from 12:00pm
